LAS VEGAS - Alicia Tyson, Jessica Marable and Michelle Davis are all headed to the NCAA Championships June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho. So far Tyson has qualified in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, Davis in the 400-meter dash and Marable in the shot put. Davis and Marable also have a chance to compete in the 200 meters and discus, respectively.
Tyson captured both the 100 and the 200 meters at last week's WAC Championships. Her season-best time of 11.22, which she ran at the UNLV Invitational April 4, ranks eighth in the nation in the latest NCAA best performance list. She also ranks eighth in the 200 with her mark of 22.89 that she clocked at WAC Championships. This is Tyson's first trip to the NCAAs.
WAC Freshman of the Year Michelle Davis caps an outstanding first season with a trip to nationals in the 400 meters. Her time of 52.75, which she accomplished en route to a first place finish at WAC Championships, is currently 12th in the nation. Davis is also expected to compete in the 200 meters with her provisional qualifying time of 23.14.
Jessica Marable continues to shine in the throw events. The UNLV record holder in both the shot put and the discus, Marable's throw of 15.79 meters in the shot put is 12th-best in the country heading into the Championships. She accomplished the feat April 4 at the Rebels' own UNLV Invitational. Marable is also on the bubble to compete in the discus next week as her throw of 52.38 at the WAC Championships is 21st in the country.
Karen Dennis, who is also the head coach of the USA Women's Track and Field team set to compete in Sydney in 2000, coaches the Rebels. Dennis and the three athletes will leave for Boise on Monday.
