LOS ANGELES - The 31st-ranked UNLV women's tennis team played without its top player and was whitewashed by eighth-ranked UCLA 9-0 Saturday at the Sunset Recreation Center Courts.
The Lady Rebels have lost five straight after a 3-0 start while the Bruins improved to 8-2. UCLA now leads the all-time series between the schools 8-0.
It marked the first time UNLV had been shut out in a full match since falling 9-0 to top-ranked Florida on March 12, 1998.
With No. 1 singles player Katarina Malec out with the flu, UNLV was forced to move all six players up one spot and won only a single set against a Bruin lineup that features three players ranked in the top 40.
No. 13 Cristina Popescu defeated No. 99 Susie Kocsis at the top spot, 6-0, 6-1. The only-three set match came at the third spot where Rochelle Raiss came back to down Marcella Valkenhoff 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles play, UCLA was led by No. 8 Amanda Basica and Annica Cooper's 8-1 win over Kocsis and Valkenhoff.
The Lady Rebels take on 13th-ranked Southern California Sunday.
