LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The 69th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team got off to a hot start in doubles but saw No. 43 San Diego State storm back in singles to hand the hosts their first Mountain West loss of the season, 4-2, on Thursday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels saw their 10-match win streak snapped in falling to 13-3 and 6-1 in the league while the Aztecs improved to 14-3 and 6-1.
In doubles play, the teams traded wins at the top and bottom of the lineup, including UNLV's
Hudson Hawkins and
Nikol Mircheva upsetting No. 57 Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turler, 6-1, at the first position. All eyes then moved to court two where
Eszter Kis-Czako and
Veronika Kliuch fought off Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache, 6-4, to clinch the team point.
In singles, the visitors won the first set on five of six courts. Mircheva, however, made it 2-0 after downing Martinache, 6-3, 3-0 retired, at No. 2 to improve to 17-6 overall, including 12-2 in dual matches this season. SDSU swept the bottom three matches without much trouble and then finished things on court three with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over
Hudson Hawkins. With the match decided, the battle at the top of the lineup between Kliuch and Chan was halted all tied up in the third set.
