ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNLV won two of three doubles matches to nip SMU 5-4 in the finals of the consolation draw of the 1999 WAC Women's Tennis Championship at the Lobo Tennis Club Saturday.
The Lady Rebels, ranked 75th and seeded ninth, finished the season 9-14 overall and 5-3 in the WAC after winning six of their last seven matches. The 11th-seeded Mustangs dropped to 7-19 and 2-7.
The two teams opened the day by splitting singles play. Winning for UNLV - all in straight sets -- were Katarina Malec, Britta Gabl and Marcella Valkenhoff.
In doubles, Malec and Gabl teamed at the third position for an 8-1 win before Veronica Goude and Marianne Bakken clinched things with an 8-3 victory at the second spot.
Top-seed Fresno State won the main-draw championship with a 5-3 victory over second seed New Mexico.
