FORT WORTH, Texas - Despite losing at the top two singles spots, the seventh-seeded UNLV women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over 10th-seeded Texas-El Paso in the first round of the WAC Women's Tennis Championship played at the Mary Potishman Lard Tennis Center Wednesday.
The Lady Rebels, who advanced to the quarterfinals, improved to 9-11 overall and 2-2 in the league.
UNLV got wins from Veronica Goude, Lisa Annebro, Britta Gabl and Marie Linusson to take a 4-2 lead after singles play. The No. 2 doubles team of Susie Kocsis and Marcella Valkenhoff then clinched the win with an 8-4 defeat at the second doubles position. The remaining two doubles matches were then haulted.
UNLV will face second-seeded San Diego State on Thursday. The Aztecs were 5-0 winners over Wyoming.
