Women's Tennis Shocks Aztecs

LAS VEGAS - The unranked UNLV women's tennis team stunned 32nd-ranked San Diego State 7-2 in a WAC match-up at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.

The Lady Rebels, who recently ended a 13-match losing streak, have now won two straight to improve to 5-13 and 1-2 in the conference. The Aztecs fell to 13-8 and 4-2 in the WAC.

Playing inspired tennis, UNLV clinched the victory in singles play by taking five of six matches. Winning early for UNLV were Veronica Goude, Susie Kocsis, Marianne Bakken and Britta Gabl. SDSU's Julie Chidley earned her school's first point with a straight-set win at the sixth spot.

The Lady Rebels then wrapped it up at the top position where Katarina Malec, who had not played since Feb. 28, upset 58th-ranked Sarah Donovan 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

In doubles play, Kocsis teamed with Marcella Valkenhoff to upset 19th-ranked Donovan and Maggie Cole 8-5 a the No. 1 position while Goude and Bakken won at the second slot.

UNLV completes its regular season on April 17 by hosting Utah.
