Women's Tennis Shut Out in WAC Final

May 2, 1998

FORT WORTH, Texas - After three days of marathon-length wins, UNLV's surprising run through the WAC Women's Tennis Championship finally tired on Saturday.

Ranked eighth in the nation, top-seeded Brigham Young whitewashed the 38th-ranked and seventh-seeded Lady Rebels 5-0 to capture the league championship at the Mary Potishman Lard Tennis Center.

UNLV fell to 11-12 after reaching the WAC final for the first time. BYU improved to 21-2 on the year.

The Cougars won all five completed matches to eliminate the need for doubles play. In fact, BYU did not have to play a single doubles match in four rounds played on the campus of TCU.

At the top spot Saturday, ninth-ranked Holly Parkinson swept Gee Gee Garvin 6-2, 6-3. Eline Chiew, ranked 14th, cruised by Susie Kocsis, 6-2, 6-0 at the second position. No. 97 Adrien Jenkins won a first-set tie-breaker and went on to a 7-6, 6-1 win over Veronica Goude in the third spot. Only Lisa Annebro at the fourth position, whose match was halted, won a set for UNLV.

"BYU played well and we had nothing left, the feet just weren't there anymore," UNLV Head Coach Ola Malmqvist said. "I'm proud of our performance here but the right team won the tournament. We put on a good show this week and now it is time to get rested up and make a run at the regionals on our home court."

UNLV hosts the NCAA West Region Championship on May 15-17 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex for the first time.
