LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's tennis team swept doubles play to clinch a 7-2 win over Utah in a WAC match-up at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.
The Lady Rebels won three straight to close out their regular season at 6-13 and 2-2 in the conference. The Utes fell to 6-9 and 1-3 in the WAC.
Katarina Malec breezed by Megan Payne at the top singles spot, 6-1, 6-1, to become one of four UNLV players to win in straight sets. Also taking matches for UNLV were Veronica Goude, Marianne Bakken and Urska Radanovic.
Leading 4-2 after singles, the Lady Rebels slammed the door with three doubles wins. The squad's only senior, Susie Kocsis, teamed with Marcella Valkenhoff to win at the top position while Goude and Bakken won at No. 2 and Malec teamed with Britta Gabl for a victory at the third spot.
UNLV is off until its last-ever appearance in the WAC championship, which is scheduled for April 28-May 1 in Albuquerque, N.M. The Lady Rebels move to the Mountain West Conference next season.
