Sept. 26, 1999

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The UNLV men?s soccer team scored six goals Sunday to defeat Centenary College, 6-3, and win the UNM Invitational.

The Gents surprised the Rebels with two quick goals in the first eight minutes. UNLV showed poise, battling back immediately with a goal at 8:32.

Jason Melendez (Lakewood, CA/Mayfair) was the hero on the afternoon, scoring both the tying and go-ahead goals for the Rebels. Melendez has been UNLV?s leading scorer the past two seasons.

Tied 3-3, UNLV scored three times in the final 20 minutes to secure the victory. Reggie Bolden (Jacksonville, AR/Mills) scored the game-winner at 69:29, and has two goals since moving into the starting lineup four games ago.

The Rebels were unable to win a tournament title in three attempts at home, but captured their first of the season in Albuquerque. They improve to 5-3-0 on the year while Centenary drops to 1-7-0.

They will again play on the road next week, with matches at Vanderbilt on Oct. 1 and Western Kentucky on Oct. 3.
