LAS VEGAS - The University of Kentucky men?s soccer team topped UNLV 1-0 Sunday at Johann Field to win the 1999 Coors Rebel Classic.
The Wildcats? Michael Stickler was named the tournament?s Most Valuable Player after scoring the only goal in Sunday?s match. Stickler?s unassisted shot put UK on top at 37:05.
The goal was Stickler?s third on the year and of the tournament, as he scored twice in the ?Cats? 5-1 victory over West Virginia Friday night.
The Rebels fired a flurry of shots at keeper Brian O?Leary late in the game, but O?Leary held on for the shutout, stopping seven shots. For his efforts, O?Leary earned Best Defensive Player honors for the weekend.
Kentucky leaves Las Vegas at 2-0-0 while the Rebels fall to 1-2-0.
In the consolation match, UC Santa Barbara overcame a 1-0 deficit early to defeat West Virginia 3-2.
The Gauchos? Thiago Martins was chosen as the tournament?s Best Offensive Player after a fine showing Sunday. Martins set up UCSB?s Joe Hubay-Dies for their first goal, then twice beat the Mountaineers? defense for two goals of his own.
The Rebels will host another tournament next weekend, the UNLV Snickers/FILA Rebel Classic. Matches will begin at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10 at Johann Field.
