Men's Soccer Falls To Gauchos

Oct. 7, 2000

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's soccer team lost its first home match of the season 3-1 to UC Santa Barbara on Friday. The loss evens the Rebels conference record at one while the Gauchos move to 1-0 in the MPSF.

UC Santa Barbara (6-6 (1-0)) scored first, and the game winner, at the 33:45 mark on a rebounded goal by Jaime Ambriz with the assist going to Brandon Meeks. Seven minutes later, the Gauchos got on the board again on another rebounded ball. This time, Dan Young fired past Rebel keeper Scott Winstead for the second goal of the match. The Gauchos dominated much of the first half, out shooting the Rebels 9-3. The match remained 2-0 into halftime.

The Rebels came out of the halftime with more enthusiasm. Freshman Alejandro Hernandez cut the UCSB lead to 2-1 at the 63:47 mark as Hernandez and junior Tyler Turchi hooked up for the Rebels' first goal of the match. As the momentum began to swing towards the UNLV, UCSB scored the insurance goal on a breakaway by Joe Hubay-Dies at 73:45. UNLV out shot the Gauchos in the second half 11-5.

The Rebels will be in action again on Sunday as they host Cal State Northridge at 12:00 p.m. at Johann Field.
