TUCSON, Ariz. - Despite a career-high 21 points from freshman Petra Gl?ser, the UNLV women's basketball team suffered its first setback of the season on Wednesday, falling to 27th-ranked Arizona, 91-74 at the McKale Center.
The Wildcats (4-1) turned it on late in the first half, causing multiple turnovers and exploding to close the half on a 10-0 run for a 48-34 lead. UNLV (5-1) never rebounded, getting no closer than 10 in the second half and at one point down by as many as 21.
The Rebels used a 14-4 run to pull within 10 with about six minutes to play, but could get the score no more respectable and had to play most of the second half without leading scorer Constance Jinks.
Jinks managed to finish the game with 12 points in just 18 minutes. Also in double figures for UNLV were Linda Fr?hlich with 11 and Dayna Gambill with 13.
Arizona was led on the night by freshman Veranda James who poured in 21 points and seven rebounds, and center Elizabeth Pickney, who added 20.
The game marked a homecoming for two Rebels. UNLV head coach Regina Miller was an assistant coach at Arizona in 1986-87, and Rebels' assistant coach Brenda Pantoja was the `Cats' starting point guard from 1992-96.
UNLV will finish its four-game road swing on Saturday, Dec. 9 with a non-conference game at Eastern Washington before returning to the Thomas & Mack Center for a four-game home stand.
