COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sophomore Michele Davis finally clocked the NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 400 meters that has been eluding her this season, winning the preliminary race at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.
Davis ran the 400 in 54.42 seconds, 0.28 seconds better than the NCAA qualifying mark. She was the only competitor in her race to qualify, and finished nearly two full seconds faster than her next closest competitor.
The UNLV women's track and field team fell from first place to fifth after the second day of competition, although finals were only conducted in four events.
Scoring for UNLV and achieveing All-MWC status were junior pole vaulter Charlotte McGee and freshman jumper Belisa Suarez. McGee, who finished eighth in the vault at last year's WAC Indoor Championships, broke her own school record with a leap of 10-11.75 and finished sixth.
Suarez, who walked on to the UNLV squad last fall, jumped a career-best 18-1.75 in the long jump to finish seventh.
Along with Davis in the 400, senior sprinter Ayanna Hutchinson won her preliminary race, leading the field in the 100 meters with a 7.40 mark. Hutchinson and Davis also finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 200-meter prelims.
