PALO ALTO, Calif. - UNLV took on the nation's No. 1-ranked women's tennis team and did not win a set as Stanford cruised to a 9-0 victory at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium Friday.
The Lady Rebels, ranked 66th, fell to 5-4, while the Cardinal improved to 11-0 on the year with its 30th-consecutive win.
Stanford, which boasts four ranked players, including two in the top 10, began the day by taking all six singles points. At the top spot, All-American sophomore Marissa Irvin stayed perfect through eight matches this season by downing 25th-ranked Katarina Malec 6-4, 6-1.
Stanford also swept doubles play, including at the top position where Irvin and Teryn Ashley, who were ranked No. 1 in the preseason, downed Malec and Bakken 8-3 and snap the UNLV team's seven-match winning streak.
The Lady Rebels are off until opening an eight-match homestand on March 11 vs. Illinois State.
