LAS VEGAS - The 71st-ranked UNLV women's tennis team won three of four three-set singles matches and upset No. 43 Oregon, 6-3, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Wednesday.
With their first win over a ranked team this spring, the Lady Rebels improved to 10-7 overall, including 8-3 at home. The Ducks fell to 5-9.
At the No. 1 spot, 41st-ranked Katarina Malec of UNLV won her eighth straight, 6-2, 6-2, over 87th-ranked Alina Wygonowska to move to 28-5 overall. At the second position, Veronica Goude held on to upset 47th-ranked Monika Gieczys, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. Rallying in three sets for UNLV points were Marianne Bakken at No. 4 and Amy Hadziosmanovic at No. 6.
The Lady Rebels, ahead 4-2, went into doubles play needing just one point. The 36th-ranked team of Malec and Bakken quickly clinched the victory with an 8-2 win over Janice Nyland and Gieczys. UNLV's final point came at No. 3 where Goude and Urska Radanovic won 8-5.
The Lady Rebels will complete their nine-match homestand vs. 49th-ranked Kansas State Thursday at 2 p.m.
