LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's tennis team, which dropped out of the national rankings for the first time all year on Wednesday, just missed pulling off a major upset in falling to No. 34 Kansas State, 5-4, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Thursday.
KSU won four of six singles matches and held on to take one doubles point for the win. With their third 5-4 loss to a ranked team in the last 10 days, the Lady Rebels fell to 10-8 overall while the Wildcats improved to 9-4.
At the No. 1 singles spot, 41st-ranked Katarina Malec of UNLV won her ninth straight, 6-3, 6-2, over 37th-ranked Petra Sedlmajerova to move to 29-5 overall. The only other Lady Rebel to earn a point was Amy Hadziosmanovic, who won 6-0, 6-2 over Natalia Farmer at No. 6.
In doubles play, UNLV quickly closed to 4-3 when Malec teamed with Marianne Bakken for an 8-4 win over Sedlmajerova and Eva Novotna at the top position. Ranked 36th, the Lady Rebel duo won its 10th straight and improved to 16-1 in dual matches.
At No. 3, Veronica Goude and Urska Radanovic tied the team score at four by coming back from a 6-3 deficit to outlast Kathy Chuda and Farmer 9-7. At the second position, Anna Pampoulova and Alena Jecminkova held on to clinch the match with an 8-6 thriller over the UNLV team of Hadziosmanovic and Michaela Gabl.
The Lady Rebels, who went 5-4 in their nine-match homestand, are off until traveling to MWC rival San Diego State on April 1.
