Malec Wins Again But Team Loses

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UNLV women's tennis team won at the top of both the singles and doubles lineup but still fell 6-3 to 27th-ranked San Diego State at the SDSU East Courts Saturday.

The Lady Rebels dropped to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in the Mountain West Conference. The Aztecs improved to 10-7 overall and 2-0 in the league.

UNLV's Katarina Malec won her 10th straight match to move to 30-5 on the year in singles. The senior, who has not lost a set since February 25, downed Whitney Wells, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 1 position.

Also winning for UNLV was Veronica Goude, 6-1, 6-4, over Laura Aguero at the No. 2 spot. SDSU, however, won the other four singles points and two of the three doubles matches.

The Lady Rebels, did however, take the top doubles match where Malec teamed with Bakken to down Wells and Aguero, 8-4. Ranked 34th, the UNLV duo improved to 20-3 on the year with its 10th consecutive victory.

UNLV closes its regular-season road schedule by taking on 74th-ranked San Diego at 10 a.m Sunday. In that match, Malec is scheduled to face the nation's fourth-ranked player, Zuzana Lesenarova in singles and the top-ranked doubles team of Lesenarova and Katarina Valykova.
