LAS VEGAS - Host UNLV will take on Utah in the first round of the inaugural Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Thursday at 10 a.m.
The fourth-seeded Lady Rebels, 12-9 overall and 2-3 in the MWC, defeated the fifth-seeded Utes 7-2 in the schools' previous meeting on Feb. 12 in Salt Lake City.
In what is UNLV's first-ever hosting of a conference championship, the women's team is attempting to win its first league title. The eight-team event boasts four teams ranked in the nation's top 65: No. 31 San Diego State, No. 46 New Mexico, No. 47 BYU and No. 65 UNLV.
Highlighting the first day, Lady Rebel Katarina Malec, the league's highest-ranked singles (28th) and doubles player (28th), will take on 63rd-ranked Megan Payne-Dorny of Utah.
Thursday's other 10 a.m. match pits top-seeded SDSU vs. Air Force. Session two, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., will feature New Mexico vs. Wyoming and BYU vs. Colorado State.
The semifinals are Friday at 2 p.m. and the championship is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. All eight teams will play three matches during the tournament, as first-through-eighth place will be determined.
