BERKELEY, Calif. - The UNLV track and field team scored 80 points to finish fourth at the annual Cal-Nevada State Championships this weekend at Edwards Stadium and Goldman Field.

Michele Davis took the spotlight on Sunday, winning both the 200 and 400 meters. Davis, who set a meet record in the 400 as a freshman at last year's Cal-Nevada Championships (53.61), eclipsed her own mark with a winning time of 52.98. She followed that performance with a victory in the 200 in 23.54.

Ayanna Hutchinson finished third in the 200 behind Davis, but claimed a win in the 100 meters in 11.70, more than 0.3 seconds faster than the field.

Junior Jenni Nelson, this week's Mountain West Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week, outpaced a field of 25 in the 5,000 meters, clocking the race's only time under 17 minutes in 16:57.97.

Hutchinson and Davis joined freshmen Chantel Yates and Erin Dangerfield to add another Rebel victory in the 4X100-meter relay, trimming their season best to 45.37. The NCAA provisional qualifying mark in that event is 45.10.

Yates appeared in the finals in two events Sunday, capturing second place in the long jump with a career best leap of 19-00.5, and finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles, going a season best 14.04.

Also competing in finals Sunday was senior Jessica Marable, who managed an eighth-place finish in the shot put despite battling injuries.

The Rebels were only six points behind Cal, who finished second with 86, and four points behind upstate rivals Nevada, Reno.

UNLV will next compete at the Steve Scott Invitational on Sunday, May 7 in Irvine, Calif.
