DURHAM, N.C. - One day after advancing to the semifinals of the 200 meters, UNLV sophomore sprinter Michele Davis captured perhaps her crowning achievement as a collegian, advancing to the finals of the 400 meters and earning All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Duke University's Wallace Wade Stadium on Thursday.
Davis, who was the final qualifier by time, clocked :53.00 in the event, well above her career best yet good enough for a ticket to Saturday's finals. She ran in the fastest of the three heats and finished fourth.
Davis' performance marks the second straight year that UNLV has boasted an All-American as Jessica Marable finished eighth in the shot put last year. Davis also becomes the Rebels' first All-American in the 400 meters since Judy Fraser took eighth place at the 1994 championships.
Also advancing for the Rebels was senior sprinter Ayanna Hutchinson. Hutchinson benefited from running in the fast heat of the 100 meters. She finished fourth in her wave, but clocked 11.42 to earn a berth in Friday's seminfinals.
Davis and Marable will both be in action on Friday. Marable will compete in the shot put, with both trials and finals contested at 6:30 p.m. EDT. Davis will run in the 200-meter semifinals at 8:55 p.m.
