Box Score

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's soccer team lost to Grand Canyon in double overtime on Sunday second day of the Coors Classic at Johann field, 3-2. This was the second overtime loss in a row for the Rebels and the third overtime match in a row.

Grand Canyon (3-1-1) tallied the first goal of the match only six minutes into the game on a rebounded off Rebel defender Matt Thompson. Eight minutes later, Rebel forward Jason Melendez scored back-to-back goals, the first one coming at the 14:37 mark on a setup shot by Alejandro Hernandez. The score remained tied 1-1 for the rest of the first half.

Beginning the second half, Melendez scored his second goal of the day and fifth of the season on a beautiful cross pass from Tuomas Talvio for the score. The Rebels seemed to be in control of the match for most of the second half until the 83rd minute when Marcelo Sori scored on a penalty kick to send the game into overtime.

During the first overtime, the Rebels dominated, shooting six shots to the Antelopes' zero, but could get nothing past the new Grand Canyon goalie, Nathan Edgin, who relieved Las Vegas native Mark Wilson in the 83rd minute.

The Rebels had ample opportunities again to score in the second overtime, out shooting the Antelopes 6-2 in that period. However, with just 15 seconds to play in the second overtime, Antelopes' midfielder Carlos Gomez put a ball past Rebel goalie Scott Winstead for the "golden goal" victory.

UNLV drops to 1-2-1 on the season and will make their first road appearance this weekend at the SMU Invitational in Dallas, Texas. The Rebels will return home Sept. 22 to face Cal Poly to kick off the conference season.
