LAS VEGAS - A stingy Utah defense and a 10-0 second-half run by the Utes led them past the UNLV women's basketball team, 70-51, at the Thomas & Mack Center on Thursday night.
The game was the conference opener for the Lady Rebels (10-3, 0-1), who saw their four-game winning streak snapped in front of a season-high 1,277 fans. Utah (13-2, 2-0) held UNLV to just 29.3 percent shooting on the night and outrebounded the Rebels, 48-37.
Down 25-21 at halftime, the Rebels battled their way back early in the second half. Kinesha Davis and Linda Fr?hlich, after begin shut out from the floor in the first half, got UNLV rolling, and the Rebels reclaimed the lead, 36-35, with 14:11 remaining.
Utah answered immediately with a 10-0 run, fueled by forward Amy Ewert, who scored six of her 17 points over that stretch.
Constance Jinks led the Rebels' efforts, reaching the 20-point mark for the second straight game. She followed a 22-point game against UC Irvine last Saturday with 20 on Thursday to go along with a season-best seven boards. Fr?hlich scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out.
UNLV will wrap up its seven-game home stand on Saturday when it hosts BYU, a 63-61 loser at San Diego State on Thursday. The game will be at 7:35 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
