LAS VEGAS - The unranked UNLV men's tennis team won only one match in falling to 12th-ranked Pepperdine 6-1 at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center Thursday in the season opener for both schools.
The Rebels, who have never beaten Pepperdine, were swept in doubles play as the Waves took one team point to start the day. At the top spot, UNLV's 21st-ranked Nenad Zivkovic and Gregor Skorin were upset by Chase Exon and Al Garland 8-4. The Rebel duo fell to 6-1 on the year, which includes fall tournaments.
In singles play, Pepperdine's 20th-ranked Garland swept 54th-ranked Zivkovic 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot.
UNLV earned its only point at No. 3 where unranked Danny Erez upset 77th-ranked Exon 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Erez, a senior from Tel Aviv, Israel, improved to 4-2 on the year.
UNLV concludes its road trip by taking on 12th-ranked USC Friday.
