Storyline: The UNLV track and field team kicks off the 2001 indoor season this week, competing at the Southwest Indoor Classic, hosted by the University of Houston, on Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Bill Yeoman Field House. Friday's schedule begins with the field events at 1:00 p.m. PST, followed by the running events at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, field events will get underway at 11:00 a.m. and running events will start at 12:00 p.m. The 12-team field includes Houston, Baylor, Jackson State, Rice, Sam Houston State, South Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Southern, Texas Tech, Tulane and UNLV.
Results: Results will be available following each day's competition. They will be posted on the world wide web at www.unlvrebels.com. Friday's results should be available by 8:00 p.m. PST, and Saturday's results should be posted no later than 5:00 p.m.
UNLV: Among the top returners for UNLV are: Michele Davis, who earned All-America status in both the 200 and 400 meters last season, Katie Barto, who was an NCAA qualifier in cross country in 2000, Jenni Lopez, who broke school records in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters last season, and Chantel Yates, a heptathlete and member of the U.S. Junior National Team. The Rebels also return Nickeisha Charles, Charlotte Covington, Erin Dangerfield, Nicole Martinez, Tianika Sharrieff, Tiffany Smith and Belisa Suarez, and will debut a talented class of freshman and transfers.
