LAS VEGAS - The 55th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team won the top three singles matches but it was not enough to keep 74th-ranked San Diego from earning a 4-3 upset at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.
In what was the opener for both schools, USD began the day by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point. The visitors got two quick victories at the number 4 and 5 spots in singles and then clinched the match with a victory on the sixth court.
The Lady Rebels were equally dominant in the top half of the lineup, however, and won the final three points.
Making her UNLV debut, Pauline Janus downed Katarina Valkyova 6-2, 6-3 at the top position. Lady Rebel Agnieszka Abram, who is ranked 39th, swept Heather Polumbus 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 while Marianne Bakken won over Belinda Kelley, 7-6, 3-2, retired.
USD will face No. 10 Pepperdine in Las Vegas Saturday while UNLV will take on the Waves Sunday at 10 a.m.
