88th Minute Penalty Kick Sends Denver Past Men's Soccer

Oct. 19, 2001

DENVER, Colo. - An 88th minute penalty kick made by the University of Denver's Michael Piserchio sent the homestanding Pioneers to a 3-2 victory over the UNLV men's soccer team in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference match held Friday afternoon in Denver, Colo.

Denver's Nic Hartman would open the game with an unassisted goal from 12-yards out at the 13:25 minute mark. Seven minutes later, junior forward Kelly Frederick, a transfer from Antigua, responded with a UNLV goal at 20:52 to lock the game at one apiece before halftime.

In the second half, Hartman collected his second goal of the game from a deflected ball off senior goalkeeper Scott Winstead, in the 72nd minute. Once again the Rebels retaliated back, as senior forward Tyler Turchi sank a header off a left side cross pass from junior Ryan Cariss at 76:18, to knot the game at 2-2.

Prior to the penalty kick game-winner, five players were issued red cards during the game. Denver's Chris Fagnant, Wilson, and UNLV's Winstead, Frederick and junior Ben Hooker, were ejected from the game.

Junior goalie Justin Dennis took the loss, after replacing Winstead with one and a half minutes left in regulation. UNLV drops to 7-5 overall, 2-1 MPSF, while Denver improves to 7-4-3 overall, 1-2 MPSF. Last week, Denver was nationally ranked in the top 25, before dropping two MPSF conference openers.

UNLV will next play Air Force on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. (MST) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
