LAS VEGAS - In its last home game of the season, the UNLV men's soccer team dropped to Sacramento State, 4-1, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference play Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas.
Senior forward Jason Melendez fired off the first goal of the game at the 30:04 minute mark, after sophomore Alex Hernandez placed a free kick toward the box, where sophomore midfielder Michael Meek deflected the ball to Melendez for the 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, Sacramento State would gain the momentum with back-to-back goals put-in by senior Sean Luigs, the team's leading scorer. The Hornets received a penalty kick in the 34th minute, which Luigs successfully completed for his sixth goal of the year. He would later earn his seventh at the top of the box from teammate Patrick Nelle at 37:22.
The Hornets would raise their lead to 3-1 before halftime, on David Fraser's goal off a right side cross pass from Nelle, his second assist of the game.
In the second half, the Rebels tried to make a comeback from the two goal deficit, but were not able to find the back of the net. Sacramento State's Joel Rodriguez found the ball from 12-yards out, knocking in the last goal of the game at 84:02.
It was Senior Day at Peter Johann Memorial Field, with five graduating seniors competing in their last home match of their careers. Seniors Jason Melendez (Lakewood, Calif.), Andrew Hooker (Victoria, BC, Canada), Tyler Turchi (Little Rock, Ark.), Kevin Lunkwitz (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Scott Winstead (Colleyville, Texas) were honored prior to the start.
The Rebels (7-7-1 overall, 2-3-1 MPSF) and Hornets (4-6-4 overall, 3-1-2 MPSF) have one more conference match left on the 2001 schedule, before heading to the MPSF Championship on Nov. 8-11 in Fresno, Calif. UNLV will next compete at New Mexico on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m., to close out the regular season.
