Campbell Qualifies For Tour

Oct. 8, 2001

MONTEREY, Calif. - Former UNLV Rebel golfer Chad Campbell became the school's fifth representative on the PGA Tour on Sunday after a one-stroke victory at the Buy.com Monterey Peninsula Classic.

The win marked Campbell's third on the Buy.com Tour this season, giving him an automatic and full exemption on the PGA Tour for the rest of this year and all of 2002.

"[The exemption] was what I was shooting for," Campbell said of his victory.

A birdie on 18 gave the Dallas native a one-stroke edge over Deane Pappas and an extra $81,000 for the win, lifting his tour record single-season earnings total to $363,959.

Campbell was also the leading money winner on the Hooters last season, winning eight of the tour's first 16 events and racking up $188,279 in winnings.

By winning the Monterey Peninsula Classic, the Permian Basin Open and the Richmond Open, Campbell joins fellow Rebels Jeremy Anderson, Ed Fryatt, Skip Kendall and Chris Riley on the PGA Tour.

Campbell wasn't the only former Rebel to show well on Sunday as Charley Hoffman posted his top finish of the year, tying for third at three-under par.
