LAS VEGAS - UNLV men's soccer players Jason Melendez and Kelly Frederick were recently selected to the 2001 NCAA Division I All Far-West Teams by the NSCAA / adidas All-America committee.
For the second straight year, Melendez earned a spot on the All Far-West First Team after having ended his four-year Rebel career with 29 goals and 22 assists for 80 points, which ranks sixth all-time in school history. A senior forward from Lakewood, Calif., Melendez is only the second UNLV men's soccer player to lead the Rebels in scoring for four consecutive seasons (1998-2001). He is also a three-time All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation First Team and Academic All-Conference selection.
Frederick, a junior forward from Antigua, received All Far-West Third Team honors. He ended the 2001 season tied as the team's second leading scorer with six goals and four assists for 16 points. Frederick is currently a member of the Antigua National Team and is a junior college transfer from Bryant & Stratton College in New York. This past season, he contributed two goals in a 6-1 upset of fifth-ranked and defending national champion Connecticut on Sept. 23.
