ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV men's soccer team ended the regular season on a high note, as their four-goal scoring assault in the second half catapulted the Rebels to a 4-1 victory over New Mexico Sunday afternoon in Albuquerque, N.M.

In the opening half of the match, both teams could not find a way to score. Junior forward Tuomas Talvio would eliminate the scoring drought in the 50th minute off a double assist from seniors Tyler Turchi and Jason Melendez.

Two minutes later, junior forward Kelly Frederick would add another point to the scoreboard on an assist by Talvio at the 52:05 minute mark. Melendez, the team's leading scorer, put the lead up to 3-0 on a double assist from freshman Brendon Bain and Frederick at 63:42.

New Mexico's Ty Hibbert was able to sneak in a goal at 67:48 from teammate Marc Laws, to disallow a shutout to UNLV and junior goalkeeper Justin Dennis. Dennis posted nine saves against the Lobos' 22 shots taken.

With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, sophomore Ryan Cochrane earned his first collegiate goal of his career at 80:28, off a double assist toward the net by the tag team of Melendez and Bain.

The Rebels (8-7-1 overall, 3-3-1 MPSF) and Lobos (3-11-2 overall, 0-6-1 MPSF) await seeding announcements for the 2001 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament on Nov. 8-11 hosted by Fresno State in Fresno, Calif. UNLV will either receive the No. 4, 5 or 6 seed in the league tournament.
