FRESNO, Calif. - A 4-1 shootout decided one of the longest games in school history as the fifth-seeded UNLV men's soccer team moved on to the semifinals of the 2001 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship after tying fourth-seeded San Diego State, 3-3, Thursday night at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, Calif.
Down 3-0 at halftime, the Rebels used a three-goal scoring spurt in the second half to tie up the game and send it into overtime. The first UNLV goal was made by sophomore Alex Hernandez (Indio, Calif.) from 15-yards out off a left side pass from senior Tyler Turchi (Little Rock, Ark.) at 61:46, followed by a similar play by junior Reggie Bolden (Jacksonville, Ark.) on the assist from sophomore Ryan Cochrane (Woodinville, Wash.) at 63:06.
Still down one goal with less than three and half minutes remaining in regulation, Turchi scored his third point of the match with the tying goal from sophomore Michael Meek (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) at the 86:51 minute mark. Two 15-minute extra intervals would follow without a winning goal on either side, leading to the game-ending shootout. In that same overtime period, senior goalkeeper Scott Winstead would suffer an injury that required the game to be stopped, awaiting medical personnel to arrive to the field.
The Rebels and Aztecs later continued play and rotated penalty kick opportunities. Freshman Brendon Bain (Beaverton, Ore.), junior Kelly Frederick (Antigua), senior Andrew Hooker (Victoria, British Columbia) and junior Kevin Lunkwitz (Las Vegas) successfully completed penalty kicks, to lead the Rebels past the first round match. Junior goalkeeper Justin Dennis replaced Winstead in goal and stopped two of the penalties taken by SDSU.
UNLV (8-7-2) will next face eighth-seeded New Mexico (4-11-2) on Friday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. Just last weekend, the Rebels defeated the Lobos, 4-1, in Albuquerque, N.M. UNM upset top-seeded Sacramento State to advance to tomorrow's semifinals.
