U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - UNLV junior sprinter Michele Davis posted the top time in the prelims of the 60, 200 and 400 meters on Friday and looks for conference titles in all three events in Saturday's finals at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Cadet Field House.
The Rebels sit in seventh place with nine team points after the second day of competition, but can make a big move after finals are contested in all of the sprint events on Saturday. UNLV has two athletes competing in the 60-meter finals, two in the 200-meter finals and four in the 400-meter finals.
Davis will lead all three of those groups after an outstanding day in the prelims. She missed an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 60 by 0.01 seconds, clocking 7.45. She broke the MWC record in the 200, set by UNLV's Ayanna Hutchinson last year, with a 23.90 mark, and clocked the best time in the 400 by more than a full second, 55.68.
On Thursday, UNLV added to its team score with points in the pole vault, 5,000 meters and distance medley relay. Charlotte Covington cleared 10-6 in the vault to finish seventh and score two points, and Jenni Lopez placed eighth in the 5,000, clocking 19:08.94, to add one more point.
The Rebels' DMR team was a pleasant surprise, finishing fifth and scoring four points in 13:02.70.
Although UNLV has only nine points, it is less than 20 points from jumping into third place. BYU, the MWC's defending champ, holds a 31-point lead in the team standings, outscoring Colorado State 79-48.
Saturday's finals will begin at 12:30 p.m. MST.
