LAS VEGAS - Tiffany Smith led a 1-3 UNLV finish in the long jump, highlighting the Rebels' performances in the first day of competition at the UNLV Open on Friday.

Smith shattered her career best in the event, clearing 18-01.75 for her first collegiate victory. She just edged Michele Davis, who cleared 18-00.50 competing unattached. Belisa Suarez finished third for the Rebels with a mark of 17-08.50.

The only other events contested on Friday were the hammer throw and shot put. Idaho's Aloha Santiago and Nikki Scheibe were the only athletes in the hammer, finishing first and second respectively. The Vandals' Katja Schieiber led a 1-2-3 finish in the shot with a toss of 47-04.25.

Texas will join both UNLV and Idaho on Saturday, the final day of the non-scoring meet. Field events will begin at 10:00 a.m. and running events will commence at 11:00 a.m.
