LAS VEGAS - Coming off its most successful season in 16 years, the UNLV football team begins spring practice with the first of 15 scheduled sessions scheduled for Thursday at Rebel Park located on campus.
The Rebels, who posted a 2000 record of 8-5, which included a 31-14 Las Vegas Bowl victory over Arkansas, get back on the field with four consecutive workouts - the first two of which are without pads.
Practices run through April 14 but the annual team scrimmage "Kickoff 2001" event is scheduled for Saturday, April 7 at Rebel Park. All spring practices are open to the public.
UNLV, which came in third in the Mountain West Conference a year ago, returns 52 lettermen and loses only 15. The squad welcomes back 15 starters overall (eight on offense, six on defense and one kicker) while the program's coaching staff remains intact from the previous season for the first time since 1985. Head Coach John Robinson enters his third spring practice at the school with a record of 11-13 and a career collegiate mark of 115-48-4 in 14 seasons.
The team opens the 2001 season with a rematch with Arkansas on September 1 in Little Rock. The season home opener is slated for six days later when Big Ten Conference co-champ Northwestern comes to Sam Boyd Stadium for the first time on a special Friday game to be nationally televised September 7.
