LAS VEGAS - The 75th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team lost its first-ever meeting with Big Ten Conference power Ohio State, 4-3, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Thursday.
The Lady Rebels fell to 4-7 on the year while the 21st-ranked Buckeyes improved to 10-5. OSU began the day by taking two of three doubles matches for one team point, which would ultimately decide the contest because the schools split singles play.
Winning for UNLV were Marianne Bakken at the third spot, Amy Hadziosmanovic at the fifth position and Britta Gabl at the sixth spot.
OSU's top two players won in straight sets. No. 32-ranked Kristy Dascoli downed Paulina Janus, 6-3, 6-3, and 97th-ranked Monica Rincon got by 85th-ranked Agnieszka Abram, 6-3, 7-6, for the match-clinching point.
The competition only gets tougher for UNLV as it takes on the nation's No. 1 ranked team, undefeated Stanford, on March 28 when the Cardinal makes it first-ever visit to Las Vegas.
