Storyline: The UNLV track and field team heads to the first of four straight road meets before the conference championships at the San Diego All-Women Invitational. The event, hosted by San Diego State, is scheduled for Saturday, April 14 at the Choc Sportsman Oval at SDSU Sports Deck, the site of this year's MWC Outdoor Championships. Field events will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the running events following at 1:00 p.m. The field of schools competing is San Diego State, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, UNLV and Utah.
UNLV: Despite fielding a depleted squad, the Rebels ran to a fourth-place finish at the UNLV Invitational last weekend and got some good overall individual contribution. In the field events, Tianika Sharrieff remained unbeaten in the high jump this outdoor season, winning her third straight event with a mark of 5-08.75. Freshman Christine Spence followed in second place, clearing 5-07. That mark ranks her fifth on the UNLV all-time marks list. The Rebels also scored big in the triple jump, as Tiffany Smith and Belisa Suarez finished second and fourth respectively. On the track, Nickeisha Charles was a runaway winner in the 400 meters. Spence pulled another second-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles and Patrice Harvey finished second in the 100 meter hurdles.
Noteworthy: Katie Barto broke the school record and provisionally qualified in the 5,000 meters, running 16:39.95 at the Stanford Invitational ... Barto also ranks second in the MWC in the 1,500m and posted a UNLV top five mark in that event ... Tiffany Smith's season best in the triple jump of 39-09.75 ranks fifth in school history.
Up Next: Following the San Diego Invitational, the Rebels head to Walnut, Calif., for one of the largest track meets in the West, the Mt. SAC Relays.
