April 27, 2001

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - A day after suffering a first-round upset, UNLV continued to struggle at the Mountain West Conference women's tennis championships but still managed to down seventh-seeded Air Force 4-3 Friday.

The third-seeded and 55th-ranked Lady Rebels will attempt to salvage a fifth-place finish at the eight-team event by taking on Utah Saturday morning at the Edora Tennis Complex in what will be the season finale for both squads.

Playing out of the losers' bracket, UNLV began the day by taking both completed doubles matches to earn one team point.

In singles play, the top of the Lady Rebel lineup came through again with straight-set wins by Paulina Janus at No. 1 and Agnieszka Abram at No. 2. However, the Falcons tied things at three by earning straight-set wins at courts 3-5. UNLV finally clinched the match when Amy Hadziosmanovic got by Kelli O' Bryant, 7-5, 6-4, at the sixth spot. UNLV improved to 10-12 overall and 6-3 in the MWC while AFA fell to 12-16 and 1-8. The Falcons will face Wyoming in the seventh-place match while top-seeded BYU will face San Diego State for the league title. Host Colorado State will take on New Mexico for third place on the final day of competition.
