SAN DIEGO - The UNLV track and field team slipped to seventh place after the final day of the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the SDSU Sports Deck on Saturday.

The Rebels racked up 61.5 points and finished just 1.5 points behind New Mexico in sixth place. BYU won its second straight conference title with 229.83 points.

Highlighting the day for UNLV was sophomore Tiffany Smith, who leapt a career best 40-00.00 in the triple jump to claim second place.

Katie Barto, although unable to improve her time in the 1,500 meters, was the Rebels' top scorer for the day, scoring 11 team points on a third-place finish in the 1,500 and a fourth-place effort in the 5,000. As the Rebels' only hopeful for the NCAA Championships, she will await next week's announcement of the NCAA Championships participants.

Barto was the only multi-event scorer for UNLV. Freshman Christine Spence finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles and claimed seventh in the high jump.

The Rebels also got scoring efforts from Jenni Lopez in the 10,000 meters, Nickeisha Charles and Erin Dangerfield in the 400, Tianika Sharrieff in the high jump, and Belisa Suarez in the triple jump.
