Rebel Football 37th In AP Poll

Aug. 11, 2001

LAS VEGAS - UNLV's football team tied for 37th with 12 total points in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll, which was released Saturday.

The Rebels finished with a single vote to end the 2000 season, which saw the program earn an 8-5 record that included a bowl-game victory.

UNLV also had 12 points to rank 43rd in the initial USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches' Poll that debuted August 2.

The Rebels, who have never been ranked in the top 25 in either of the major polls, were recently tabbed 24th by Football Digest and 25th by Sports Illustrated.

Three of the school's 2001 opponents received votes by the AP. Big 10 favorite Northwestern, which comes to Las Vegas for the first time ever on Sept. 7, was ranked 16. The only other Mountain West Conference team to receive votes by the AP, Colorado State, was ranked 24. Also, Southeastern Conference member Arkansas, which will open the season on August 30 by hosting the Rebels in a rematch of last year's Las Vegas Bowl, stood 35th with 22 points.
