SEATTLE - As five minutes ticked away in overtime, the University of Portland found a shot in traffic to take a 3-2 win over the UNLV men's soccer team on the final day of the NIKE/Husky Classic Sunday afternoon in Seattle.
Prior to the overtime battle, Portland controlled the first half of the game with two early scores at the 7:04 and 13:44 minute marks to put them ahead 2-0. Junior forward Tuomas Talvio later found some good fortune thanks to one of Portland's defenders, who deflected his cross pass into the goal, to put the game at 2-1 before halftime.
With six minutes left in regulation, junior forward Ryan Cariss sent a ball from senior Jason Melendez past the keeper in the bottom right of the net, to tie up the match and force the game into an extra period.
Portland's Sheldon Maistry scored the game-winner for the Pilots, improving their record to 5-3 on the season. UNLV goes to 4-4 overall with senior goalie Scott Winstead taking the loss with nine saves.
The Rebels next take a week off before heading to UC Riverside on Sunday, Oct. 7 for a single game slated for 3 p.m. in Riverside, Calif.
