LAS VEGAS - UNLV head football coach John Robinson announced the addition of two new position coaches to his staff Monday as Vince Alcalde was named quarterbacks coach and David Robinson was hired to oversee tight ends.
Alcalde, 36, is familiar with Southern Nevada after having spent 2001 as the offensive coordinator for the XFL's Las Vegas Outlaws. At UNLV, the former college quarterback will oversee the Rebels' passing attack, which ranked 104th in the nation last season with an average of just 144 yards per game.
"I feel Vince is a perfect fit to fill our needs," Robinson said. "He has experience with a sophisticated level of football and knowledge of an NFL-type passing game. Our staff has had a chance to spend time with him over the last two weeks and we think he will be a great addition. I look forward to Vince helping us expand our offensive ideas."
Before his one season as part of the now-defunct XFL, Alcalde spent five years with the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe. He served as offensive coordinator from 1999-00 after previously coaching receivers, tight ends and kickoff returns for the Claymores from 1996-98, including tutoring 1996 NFLE Offensive MVP, wide receiver Sean LaChapelle, and 1996 World Bowl MVP Yo Murphy.
A 1989 graduate of Boise State, Alcalde was a two-year starter for the Broncos under center, posting nine 200-yard passing games. His 1987 passing total of 2,523 yards still ranks fifth in school history. He went on to be a part-time assistant at his alma mater for three years before serving as a graduate assistant for Utah State, where he earned his master's degree in 1993. At both schools, he learned under former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jim Zorn. From there Alcalde went on to work for two years as offensive coordinator at Arizona Western College in Yuma where his offenses averaged 400 yards and 32 points per game as part of the NJCAA. Alcalde joins the UNLV coaching staff in a spot created when third-year assistant Joe Hubbard moved into a role in the athletics department heading the newly formed recruiting center, which deals with all 17 Rebel programs.
David Robinson comes to UNLV from Cal State Northridge, which discontinued its football program after the 2001 season. The oldest son of John Robinson served as defensive line coach for the Matadors for three seasons, including as associate head coach a year ago. Also expected to help coach Rebel special teams, he replaces Ken Niumatalolo, who recently left to be assistant head coach at Navy.
"Dave brings extensive experience in college coaching," John Robinson said. "His credentials extend to schools in the Pac-10 and Big 10 conferences. He is an outstanding teacher and has a keen understanding of the concepts of the game. I am happy he is rejoining my staff." A 15-year coaching veteran of various levels, David Robinson started his career in 1986 as an assistant at St. Anthony's High School in Long Beach, Calif. He followed his father in 1987 to the NFL's Los Angeles Rams and served as a general assistant. A year later, he moved to UC Davis and coached linebackers for two seasons for the Div.-II Aggies before spending 1990 as a graduate assistant at the University of Michigan. Robinson then spent one season each at California, as a volunteer assistant, and College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif., before joining his father's staff at Southern California. He coached the Trojans' tight ends for three seasons (1993-95) and the linebackers for two (1996-97). He returned to College of the Desert for one season before joining head coach Jeff Kearin at Northridge in 1999.
A tight end in college himself, Robinson, 38, was a two-year starter for Fullerton Junior College before transferring to play at Long Beach State in 1984-85. He earned his bachelor's degree from the school in 1987.
In accordance with UCCSN and University policies, David Robinson's immediate supervisor will be Senior Associate Athletic Director Jerry Koloskie, who will report directly to UNLV President Carol C. Harter regarding Robinson's employment.
