BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UNLV men's golf team shot its fourth and fifth consecutive sub-par rounds on Monday and sit tied for fourth after two rounds at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.

The Rebels torched the Old Overton Course (Par 71, 6,958 Yards), shooting a three-under 281 in the opening round and a one-under 283 in the nightcap. At four-under, UNLV is tied with Wake Forest for fourth place and eight shots behind top-ranked Clemson for the team lead.

Ryan Moore's six-under day went a long way toward the Rebels' low scoring. The sensational sophomore carded 66 in his opening round, the best score posted on the day. Leading after 18, Moore gave back a couple of strokes in the afternoon and sits one stroke behind Arizona's Chris Nallen after a one-under 70 in the second round.

Moore was not the only Rebel to score low or find a place in the top 10. Senior Brien Davis turned in his best two rounds of the season, shooting 70 and 68 to end the day four-under. He is tied for sixth.

J.C. Deacon pitched in rounds of 74 and 71, and sits tied for 27th. Freshman Mitch Carlson produced a 71 in the morning, followed by a 75, and Travis Whisman fired back-to-back 74s to round out the Rebels' scoring.

UNLV, which has climbed to No. 2 in the latest Golfweek rankings, has just one team round over par in eight outings this season, and has turned out five straight sub-par rounds, including three shot at the Carpet Capital Collegiate last month.

The Rebels needed low scores to hang in contention. Through two rounds, seven teams are separated by just five strokes.

Final round play at the Jerry Pate will begin at 8:00 a.m. EDT.
