Miracle At 42nd

Oct. 22, 2002

The latest edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index was kind to UNLV, as the Rebels checked in at second and 42nd, respectively, in the men's and women's rankings announced Tuesday.

The Rebels men held their position as the No. 2 team in the country after a fourth-place finish at the rain-shortened Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The women, however, leapt 12 positions, improving from 54th to a program-best 42nd.

"I am happy with that," UNLV women's golf head coach Missy Ringler said. "This team is young, and we continue to work hard to improve on the national scene."

Ringler's Rebels earned their highest-ever ranking after posting their best-ever finish, a sixth-place effort at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Intercollegiate.

Individually, freshman Sunny Oh became the first woman at UNLV to crack the top 100, checking in at No. 92 after tying for fifth last week.

The men's side was littered with its usual Rebel flavor. Sophomore phenom Ryan Moore finally climbed into the top 10 after a runner-up finish at the Jerry Pate. Moore improved from 14th to eighth in the individual rankings, while teammate JC Deacon slipped to 94th and Brien Davis trailed at 96th.

Both Rebel golf programs have just a single event remaining on the fall schedule. The men head to Kahuku, Hawaii, to compete in the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate on Nov. 3-5. The women go nowhere, but instead host the first women's collegiate event to come to Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Founders' Women's Collegiate Showdown is slated for Nov. 11-13 at Anthem Country Club.
