Chong Picks Up Consolation Prize

SAN DIEGO - UNLV sophomore Tracie Chong won three times Sunday to win the consolation bracket at the 2002 Omni Hotels West Region Women's Tennis Championships on the campus of San Diego State.

Chong first got by Rani Setiawati of Cal State Northridge in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, to advance. Switching to a pro-set scoring system for the semifinals, Chong downed Sarah Gregg of UCLA 8-5. In the finals, she cruised past Veronica Koksova of Pepperdine 8-3. Koksova had advanced earlier in the day by getting by another Lady Rebel, Leentjie Oosthuizen, in the quarterfinals 7-5, 7-5.

Chong, who lost in the first round of the main draw, won four times and advanced on one default to win the consolation bracket.

"It was a nice way to end the tournament," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "I am proud of the way Tracie competed and really toughed it out three times on the final day."

UNLV will close out is fall individual tournament schedule at the Arizona State Invitational November 8-10.
