Netters Season Ends In MW Final With Controversial Closing

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV women's tennis team saw its season end with a 4-2 final to fourth-seeded Boise State in Saturday's Mountain West Championship tournament staged at the Darling Tennis Center. Because of circumstances around the clinching point, the match was requested by UNLV to be under protest but the results are complete and final.

The Rebels ended their season at 18-7 while the Broncos will have the league's automatic bid to the NCAA and improved their record to 19-6.

On a wildly windy, sunny but unseasonably cool day in Southern Nevada, UNLV came out and dominated doubles play, taking matches at the top two spots in the lineup for a 1-0 lead. Nikol Mircheva and Hanna Vinahradava downed Maya Dutta and Zdena Safarova, 6-2, at No. 1 while Cindy Hu and Coco Zhao, the winningest duo in school history, won by the same score at No. 2 over Ryan Kershner and Lorelyz and Marruffo.

Singles, however, were a tussle. BSU quickly tied things when Safarova swept Hu, 6-0, 6-2, at the top spot and then took the lead when Schaefer downed Mircheva, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4. The second court split sets before Dutta made it 3-1 Broncos with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Veronika Kliuch at No. 2.

The Rebels remained in solid position, however, to get to four points after winning the first set on all remaining courts. Zhao finished off Bhakti Shah, 7-6, 6-1, at the third position to draw the Rebels closer. Kaho Oyama won her first set over Lorelyz Marruffo and was nearing a win at number five when controversy happened one court over. Vinahradava easily won the first set over Ari Briones Ginesta but saw the Bronco rally from a deficit to take set two. The pair was battling for what seemed to be the deciding set when the umpire did not allow a let for UNLV after a foreign object swirled on to the court area and the Bronco player continued to play and would record the winning shot, which set off a chaotic series of events that saw UNLV officials and coaches remain on the court for nearly an hour.
