LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The magic number for the UNLV women's golf team on Tuesday was 75, as three different Rebels carded the three-over par score at the Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate.
Sophomores Hwanhee Lee and Young Pak and freshman Sunny Oh were responsible for the three 75s. Combined with an 81 by sophomore Christine Hentzner, the team totaled 306, five strokes better than its opening-round score.
"Young played much better today, and that was the difference," UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. Pak, playing in her first collegiate tournament, trimmed 10 strokes off her opening-round total.
Despite the team effort, UNLV actually dropped a spot on the leaderboard, falling from a seventh-place tie to eighth in the 20-team field.
Host New Mexico State pulled to the front of the pack with a tourney-best round of 291. The Aggies' Alena Sharp and Kelly Cavanaugh led the way and sit first and second respectively on the leaderboard.
Oh is the top Rebel through two rounds, sitting in a tie for eighth individually at five-over, six strokes behind Sharp.
UNLV will look to improve its position in the standings during Wednesday's final round, which will begin with a 7:30 a.m. MDT shotgun start at the 6,303-yard, par-72 University Golf Course. As little as seven strokes separate UNLV from fourth-place San Jose State.
