KAHUKU, Hawaii - The UNLV men's golf team made its five-stroke lead stand, holding off Tennessee for the team title at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
The Rebels shot one-over par 289 in Tuesday's final round at the par-72 Links at Kuilima to win by four over Tennessee. Four players crowded into the top 10 of the 98-player field.
JC Deacon, who began the day trailing Tennessee's David Skinns by three, made up enough to surpass the Volunteers' second-round leader with an even-par score. However, the day's low round went to Washington State's Dustin White, who shot 67 and leapt 10 places on the leaderboard to win the individual crown.
Deacon finished alone in second place, one stroke behind White. Trailing Deacon by one stroke and one spot on the leaderboard was UNLV freshman Mitch Carlson, and one stroke behind Carlson was sophomore Ryan Moore.
Senior Brien Davis capped the Rebels' round, shooting 73 to finish in a six-way tie for 10th place. Sophomore Travis Whisman's 76 didn't figure into the Rebels' score.
Despite finishing strong enough to win, the one-over round broke a string of seven straight rounds in which UNLV had finished par or better as a team. However, the round was good for UNLV's first of the season, and in four tournaments this fall, the Rebels have not finished worse than fourth.
