WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - Senior Clark Corbett started his spring with a bang, firing a one-under 71 in the first round of the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate at the Kings' Golf Course on Wednesday.
Corbett was the UNLV men's golf team leader after Round 1 and sat tied for 13th place in the individual race. Despite Corbett's impressive play, three 76s racked up a nine-over par 297 for the Rebels as a team, who sit 19th among the 24-team field.
Two of those four-over-par 76s belonged to the Rebels' top two players, Ryan Moore and Calvin Kupeyan. The third was turned in by junior Brien Davis, playing in his first competitive round of the season.
Also seeing his first action of the year was sophomore Brandon Askew. Askew finished the opener at two-over par, tied for 60th individually.
Not a single Rebels broke 37 on the back nine, something coach Dwaine Knight knows they must improve upon in order to climb in this tournament.
The second round of play begins on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. HT.
