STORYLINE: The UNLV men's golf team will conclude a 13-day trip to the Hawaiian Islands this week after play in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event begins on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Honolulu's Leilehua Golf Course, with 18 holes to begin each morning at 7:30 a.m. HST.
ABOUT UNLV: The Rebels finished 14th at the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intercollegiate. Clark Corbett led the squad at five-over, but was even after two rounds. Ryan Moore carded the team's lowest round (70), leading a team par effort in the second round.
THE FIELD: The John A. Burns Intercollegiate, a regular stop on UNLV's schedule, consists of a field of the top teams in the country. The University of Hawaii plays host to Arizona, Auburn, BYU, California, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii-Hilo, Nagoya (Japan), New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Pacific, San Diego State, San Jose State, Stanford, Utah, UCLA, UNLV, UTEP and Wyoming.
THE LINEUP: UNLV's lineup for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate will be senior Clark Corbett, juniors Brien Davis and Calvin Kupeyan, sophomore Brandon Askew and freshman Ryan Moore.
THE BURNS: A yearly favorite for the Rebels, UNLV has had quite a bit of success at the Leilehua Course over the years. Jeremy Anderson carded three straight 66s to win the event in 2000 and break the school's record for low 54. Four different players have shot 65 or better and two have medalled. The Rebels have three Burns' team titles to their credit, in 1991, '98 and '99.
HEAD COACH DWAINE KNIGHT: UNLV men's golf head coach Dwaine Knight is in his 15th season as the Rebels' skipper. During his tenure, UNLV has been a perennial top-25 squad, won five league championships, advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times, and captured the 1998 national title. The only coach in the country to twice claim GCAA National Coach of the Year honors in the 1990s (1991 and 1998), Knight has produced 15 All-Americans and sent four players to the PGA Tour (Jeremy Anderson, Chad Campbell, Ed Fryatt, Chris Riley).
UP NEXT: Following the John A. Burns, the Rebels return home to prepare for the Las Vegas Intercollegiate to be played at Las Vegas' Southern Highlands Golf Club March 8-10.
