HONOLULU - UNLV freshman golfer Ryan Moore shot a first-round 70 at the John A. Burn Intercollegiate at the Leilehua Golf Course on Wednesday and is tied for sixth individually.
Teammate Brandon Askew sits just one stroke behind Moore, and behind the 1-2 punch, the Rebels are in fifth place in the team standings after a one-over par round. They could move as high as second with a two-stroke improvement, but trail tournament-leading San Diego State by 15 shots.
The Aztecs were the benefactors of an opening-round 65 by John Lieber. Lieber holds a three-stroke edge on Auburn's Kevin Haefner and no more than a five-stroke lead on seven other players, including Moore.
Rounding out the Rebels' lineup were Clark Corbett, who shot a one-over 73, and Brien Davis, whose three-over 75 put UNLV just one stroke over par. Calvin Kupeyan's 77 was not counted toward the team total.
The Rebels play the second of the three-round affair on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. HST.
